YAREN, Nauru – The Nauru Chess Federation celebrated the nation’s 57th Independence Day with a chess tournament held on Saturday, January 18, at the Nauru College school compound. The event, organized as part of the national festivities, featured preliminary rounds for individual players, with the finals scheduled for the following week.
This tournament comes on the heels of the federation’s successful team chess competition, where winners were recently announced. The current individual event has seen strong participation, particularly from women and youth, reflecting the federation’s goal of expanding the sport’s reach across the community.

In a major highlight, the federation revealed the selection of a seven-member team to represent Nauru at the Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia. The team includes five men and two women, with Nauru’s top chess player—ranked at the master level and just below grandmaster—leading the delegation.
“We are proud of the team’s achievements and confident they will represent Nauru well at the championship,” said a federation spokesperson.
The Nauru Chess Federation organizes national tournaments through fundraising and support from government and private sponsors. The organization remains committed to promoting chess locally, with a particular focus on encouraging women and youth to take part in the game.
The federation has called on the community to continue supporting its initiatives, which not only honor Nauru’s independence but also build pathways for local talent to shine on the regional and global stage.
