Apia, Samoa – The Tupua Tamasese Meaole (TTM) Hospital in Samoa recently hosted a medical team from the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) as part of an ongoing collaboration to strengthen fertility and reproductive health care in the country. Over two weeks, the team provided consultations and treatment for more than 50 new patients while working closely with Samoan clinicians to expand training and services in women’s health.
The OHSU team, led by Dr. Krieg and Dr. Palmor, partnered with Dr. Karan, Dr. Alatagi, Dr. Kiwi, Dr. Tapa, and Dr. Maru to deliver clinical care and share best practices across departments. They also conducted teaching sessions for hospital staff and medical students from Samoa, the Solomon Islands, and the University of Bristol, supporting local capacity-building efforts in fertility care and obstetrics.
The visit was well received by hospital staff and the Ministry of Health, who expressed strong interest in continued collaboration. Dr. Krieg has been invited to present at the Pacific Society of Reproductive Health Conference in Tonga in 2026, with additional research partnerships under discussion with Yale University’s Dr. Nicola Hawley.
The mission was facilitated with the support of Dr. Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson, Professor of Pacific Island Studies at Portland State University, who helped connect OHSU with Samoa’s health system.
